Last Light in the Dark - Episode thirteen

The blast door hissed open, revealing the dimly lit corridor beyond. The team moved out in tight formation, every sense on high alert as they made their way towards the maintenance tunnels. The eerie silence of the station was broken only by their cautious footsteps and the occasional creak of metal settling.

As they entered the narrow confines of the maintenance tunnels, Marcus couldn't shake the feeling of claustrophobia. The weight of the fuel cells on his back seemed to grow heavier with each step, and the shadows cast by their helmet lights danced menacingly along the walls.

"Watch your footing," Rylee whispered, her voice tense. "These grates can be treacherous."

They moved as quickly as they dared, the winding path of the tunnels disorienting in the low light. Every junction, every turn brought a new surge of anxiety – would they encounter another of those monstrosities?

After what felt like an eternity, Nigel's voice broke the tense silence. "We're almost there. The airlock to our shuttle should be just ahead."

A collective sigh of relief rippled through the team. They had made it this far without incident – maybe their luck was finally turning.

But as they rounded the final corner, that hope was shattered. There, blocking their path to freedom, was the nightmarish creature they had encountered earlier. It seemed even larger now, its writhing mass of tentacles and ooze filling the corridor.

"Oh, God," Chelsea breathed, her voice barely audible.

"New weapons!" Rylee barked, already raising the sleek rifle they had discovered.

The air was filled with the hum of energy as they fired, but to their horror, nothing happened. The weapons remained inert in their hands.

"They're not working!" Lucas shouted, panic evident in his voice.

Marcus's mind raced. "The fuel! They must need a special kind of power source!"

There was no time for further discussion. The creature surged forward, its inhuman shriek echoing through the tunnels. The team scattered, desperately trying to avoid its grasping tentacles while still clinging to their precious cargo of fuel cells.

"Fall back!" Rylee ordered. "To the airlock!"

They retreated, firing with their conventional weapons. The creature's advance slowed, but didn't stop. Marcus felt a tentacle wrap around his ankle, yanking him off his feet. He cried out, feeling the fuel cells slip from his grasp.

"Marcus!" Chelsea was there in an instant, her plasma cutter slicing through the tentacle. Marcus scrambled to his feet, but the fuel cells were gone, lost in the chaos.

Somehow, they made it to the airlock. Nigel worked frantically at the controls while the others provided covering fire. With a hiss of equalizing pressure, the inner door opened.

"Go, go, go!" Rylee shouted.

They tumbled into the airlock, Rylee slamming her fist on the emergency close button. The creature's tentacles slapped against the closing door, but it held. Moments later, they were aboard their shuttle, breathing heavily as the realization of their narrow escape sank in.

As Nigel prepared for launch, the team took stock of their situation. They had lost several fuel cells in the frantic retreat, but they still had enough to break orbit and clear the station.

As the shuttle pulled away from the nightmarish station, a heavy silence fell over the crew. They had escaped, but at what cost? And what awaited them beyond?

Nigel's voice broke the quiet. "I've been going through more of the station's logs," he said, his tone grim. "It looks like we weren't the first to try and escape. There were multiple attempts, but... none of the ships ever made it back."

"But we know nothing came through on the other side of the barrier," Chelsea said, her brow furrowed. "So that means..."

"No one made it," Marcus finished, the weight of the realization settling over them all.

Rylee was quiet for a long moment, her expression unreadable behind her helmet visor. Finally, she spoke. "We can't go back, and we don't have enough fuel to risk the barrier. That leaves us with only one option."

The team exchanged uneasy glances, knowing what she was going to say before the words left her mouth.

"We're going to the planet," Rylee declared, her voice filled with grim determination. "Whatever answers we're looking for, whatever is behind all this – that's where we'll find it."

As the shuttle changed course, heading towards the shrouded world below, Marcus couldn't shake the feeling that they were flying from one nightmare into another. But with their options exhausted and their fuel supply dwindling, they had no choice but to press on into the unknown.

The planet loomed before them, a mystery waiting to be unraveled – or a tomb that would seal their fate forever.
