Last Light in the Dark - Episode seventeen

The world exploded into a cacophony of light and sound as Marcus and the team plunged into the swirling vortex. He felt as if he were being torn apart and reassembled, his very essence scattered across time and space. Images flashed before his eyes – glimpses of past, present, and possible futures, all blending together in a dizzying kaleidoscope.

Then, with a sudden jolt, it was over. Marcus found himself sprawled on a cold, metal floor, gasping for breath. Around him, his teammates were similarly disoriented, struggling to their feet.

"Everyone okay?" Rylee's voice came through the comm, strained but steady.

A chorus of affirmatives followed as the team regained their bearings. Marcus looked around, his eyes widening as he took in their surroundings.

They were in what appeared to be a massive laboratory, filled with equipment far more advanced than anything they had seen before. Holographic displays flickered with complex equations, and at the center of the room stood a familiar sight – the same portal device they had seen in the frozen command center.

But this one was active, pulsing with energy.

"Where are we?" Chelsea whispered, her voice filled with awe and trepidation.

Before anyone could respond, a door at the far end of the lab slid open. A group of scientists entered, engrossed in conversation. They stopped short when they saw the team, their eyes widening in shock.

"Who are you?" one of them demanded. "How did you get in here?"

Rylee stepped forward, her hands raised in a placating gesture. "We're here to help. There's going to be an accident with your portal device, and we need to prevent it."

The lead scientist's eyes narrowed. "That's impossible. This facility is top-secret, and our security is impenetrable. You shouldn't even know about this project, let alone be able to predict its future."

"We know because we've seen it," Marcus said, stepping up beside Rylee. "We've lived through the consequences of what happens here today."

The scientists exchanged skeptical glances, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in their eyes. The lead scientist opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, an alarm began to blare.

"Energy spike detected in the portal matrix!" one of the other scientists shouted, rushing to a nearby console. "It's becoming unstable!"

The room erupted into chaos as the scientists scrambled to contain the growing instability. Marcus and his team exchanged grim looks – this was the moment they had come to prevent.

"Let us help," Rylee insisted, moving towards the portal device. "We've seen how this plays out. We might be your only chance to stop it."

The lead scientist hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. What do you need us to do?"

For the next few minutes, the lab was a flurry of activity. Nigel worked alongside the facility's scientists, his fingers flying over the controls as he attempted to stabilize the portal. Chelsea and Lucas helped to reroute power, while Marcus and Rylee assisted in reinforcing the containment field.

But despite their best efforts, the portal continued to grow more unstable. The air crackled with energy, and reality itself seemed to warp around the pulsing vortex.

"It's not working!" Nigel shouted over the growing roar of the portal. "The reaction is too far gone. We can't stop it!"

Marcus felt a cold dread settle in the pit of his stomach. Had they come all this way, only to fail at the crucial moment?

Suddenly, an idea struck him. "What if we don't try to stop it?" he called out. "What if we redirect it instead?"

Rylee's eyes widened as she caught on to his train of thought. "The barrier around the system – it was created by this event. If we can't prevent it entirely..."

"We might be able to control where it forms," Nigel finished, his fingers already flying over the controls. "It's risky, but it might be our only chance."

The lead scientist nodded grimly. "Do it. Whatever happens, it can't be worse than what you've seen."

As Nigel and the other scientists worked frantically to recalibrate the portal, Marcus felt time itself seeming to slow down. Everything hinged on this moment – not just their own fate, but the fate of entire worlds.

The portal pulsed and writhed, growing larger with each passing second. Arcs of energy lashed out, scorching the walls and floor. The very air seemed to vibrate with barely contained power.

"Now!" Nigel shouted, slamming his hand down on the final control.

For a heart-stopping moment, nothing happened. Then, with a deafening roar, the portal imploded. A shockwave of energy burst outward, enveloping everything in its path.

Marcus felt himself being lifted off his feet, his world dissolving into blinding light. The last thing he saw before consciousness slipped away was his teammates, frozen in a moment of desperate hope.

Then, darkness.
