Sera Grenn, brilliant lead engineer and granddaughter of seal-ritual martyr Tomas Grenn, fixes a precision tolerance failure in the Engineering Quarter and debates the culture of sacrifice with Scavenger colleague Asha val Mechas.

Cael Morevan, New Haven's aging Coordinator, observes successful Scavenger-Confederation integration in the market before the fourth tremor of the week strikes during a council session.

Cael visits Tomas's grave and confesses his plan to keep the seal failure secret. Aldric joins him and counsels pragmatism. They discuss mounting secret expeditions for artifacts while maintaining the lie.

Spring arrives. 203 survivors from kingdoms of millions. Planting begins on 10-15 acres. Cael learns farming from Maren, who teaches him that planting seeds is planting hope. Everyone works or goes hungry.

Second month of winter. Fights breaking out over rations. Tomas stops violence with exile threats. Harren organizes work crews for purpose. Ilara asks if Cael believes in anything anymore. Faith is gone.

Ray reveals the Last Hour is a sanctuary for supernatural beings and that Victoria Cross is actually Azazel, a 4,000+ year-old Grigori in hiding. Three Nephilim have already been captured in the harvesting operation. Ray agrees to help despite questions about his neutrality.

Cardinal-General Corven is revealed as a traitor who made a dark pact with entities beyond reality. In secret meetings with a shadow demon, he reveals plans to use the war at Valtherion as a catalyst to weaken the ancient seals imprisoning the Wurm Lords.

Tomas arrives at the provincial garrison and begins military training under Centurion Gaius. He bonds with tent-mates: Lucien the carpenter, Marcus the former guard, Helena the revenge-driven volunteer, and Orin the scribe.
