The Heretic's Communion

The last night before the Crucible assault. Ren builds a fire and the found family gathers - Nella, Harsk, Fossick, Callum, and Moth. Fossick tells terrible jokes, Harsk gives an iron token and a handmade leather pouch for the figurine, Callum prays simply.

The army reaches visual range of the Crucible - a mountain-sized boneglass formation with crystal spires, organic matter pulsing through its structure. Demons circle the base in worship/tending patterns. Ren identifies collapsed pre-demon mine shafts as infiltration points.

The army enters the Sunderlands. The transition is gradual: grey grass, spiraling leaves, warm pulsing ground, boneglass as primary light source beneath permanent twilight. The territory's wrongness produces ambient fear.

The army marches toward the Crucible. Ren inventories the force from the column's edge: Nella marching with branded precision, three brands visible; Harsk steady beside the forge, hands shaking only when idle; Fossick managing logistics with seventeen days of rations; Callum's reformist...

On the final night before the march east, Ren finds Moth at the camp depot. Moth breaks her two-year silence with four sentences: the ground remembers what grew before, it was wounded, the wound has not healed, and the Crucible is where the pain is open.

The full coalition war council debates Crucible strategy: Lethane proposes divine frontal assault, Vasserine proposes a conventional siege, and Ren proposes infiltration through the formation's pre-existing mine shafts. A hybrid plan is adopted combining all three.

Ren observes Nella struggling three times to retrieve Fossick's name, each pause a symptom of her third brand's emotional degradation. At the camp perimeter, Nella articulates the damage precisely: her memories remain intact but are emotionally drained, flat and accessible but empty of resonance.

Intelligence from multiple fronts converges on a single point in the Sunderlands called the Crucible, identified as the source of the demonic plague and all boneglass networks. Lethane declares an all-or-nothing campaign to destroy it.

Ren returns to camp after killing Tik, hollow and changed by the act. The found family gathers wordlessly around him in the dark tent--Nella holds his hand, Fossick brings food, Harsk builds with leather scraps, Callum prays, and Moth appears silently to place a boneglass shard that resonates...
