Verada Requiem

During a two-day army pause at a river crossing, Ren's group gathers at Harsk's fire as Fossick tells stories; Nella's branded memory loss becomes starkly visible when she forgets who first told Fossick about the wine.

The last night before the Crucible assault. Ren builds a fire and the found family gathers - Nella, Harsk, Fossick, Callum, and Moth. Fossick tells terrible jokes, Harsk gives an iron token and a handmade leather pouch for the figurine, Callum prays simply.

Ren settles into the lowest-status cot in the scout barracks and faces a challenge from Breck, a veteran scout. Ren deflects with the word Harrowfeld and earns grudging orientation on Section Three operations.

Nella follows through on her decision to take Verada's brand, and Ren witnesses the ceremony at her request. Afterward she rises steadier but emotionally dimmed—warm but reduced. The survivor band gathers in silent witness as Lethane announces the next campaign phase: the Cathedral Province.

Lethane summons Ren to her command pavilion at midnight, reveals she has known he was a thief since the first briefing, and exposes her thirty-seven brands and their devastating personal cost.

The army reaches visual range of the Crucible - a mountain-sized boneglass formation with crystal spires, organic matter pulsing through its structure. Demons circle the base in worship/tending patterns. Ren identifies collapsed pre-demon mine shafts as infiltration points.

Nella presents Ren to Captain Drevin for scout corps assessment. Ren opens the armory padlock in under thirty seconds, reveals camp vulnerabilities mapped during third watch, and bypasses two soldiers before going over a branded sentry in the movement test.

Ren discovers the Dimming's advance is accelerating exponentially and correlates with boneglass deposit density. He shares the data with Callum, who theorizes the army may be worsening the wound, and with Nella, who frames it as a tactical crisis: four months until the Dimming reaches camp,...

A forced branding petition signed by fourteen branded officers threatens Ren's unbranded command position. Ren processes Volsk's death in the casualty list and reflects on the cost of the branding system.
