Belphegor
Antagonist — World at War
A demon lord powerful enough to possess a trained Hunter, destroy a human host in hours, and move through the world like a force of nature. Belphegor's shadow hangs over Abigail's story long after their direct confrontation ends.
About Belphegor
Demon lords operate differently from the rank-and-file demons that Hunters encounter in the field. They're strategic, they're ancient, and they're searching for something. Belphegor was searching for something hidden in Ravens Peak — and the path to finding it ran through possessing Abigail.
The possession changed everything. Abigail's ordeal, Arthur's sacrifice, the events that followed — none of it happens without Belphegor's arrival. The demon moves with superhuman speed and strength, can throw multiple objects telekinetically, and burns through human hosts so fast that keeping a vessel intact is its own tactical problem.
Arthur Vangeest ended it the only way he knew how — with a blood sigil, a trap, and a willingness to pay whatever the cost turned out to be. The confrontation is one of the defining moments of the World on Fire trilogy, and its aftermath is something Abigail carries into every page of World at War.
Personality
Core Traits: Incredibly powerful, deeply strategic, and focused on whatever it was searching for in Ravens Peak. Belphegor isn't a random force of destruction — it has a goal, and everything it does is in service of that goal.
Physical Presence: Possesses human vessels, including Abigail herself at the story's most vulnerable moment. Destroys bodies in hours. The physical toll of its possession is visceral and immediate.
Character Arc
Belphegor's arc in the World on Fire trilogy reaches its end in Ravens Peak — trapped by Arthur's blood sigil, dragged toward Hell as Arthur appears to die. But in the World at War series, Belphegor's legacy is everywhere: in Abigail's transformation, in what Abigail became after, in the question of what was actually found in Ravens Peak that set everything in motion.

Raven's War (Book 1)
Belphegor's presence in World at War is felt rather than seen — in the trauma Abigail carries, in the transformation it triggered, and in the questions about what the demon lord was ultimately looking for.
