How to read this document
This is the chronological and geographic reference for the Last Light series. It is meant as an evergreen anchor — the document you come back to when you cannot remember whether the Sanctuary fall happened in book two or book three, or which side of the Eclipse formation Vance commanded, or what year Kate was when the barrier closed.
There are three sections. The series timeline. The faction tree. The place reference. Spoilers throughout — read after the books, not before.
Series timeline
I keep the internal calendar of the series in Common Era years, with a small amount of fudging at the edges. The fudging is intentional. I wanted Last Light to feel like it could be happening fifty years from now or two hundred years from now without committing to either. The book years below are internally consistent; their mapping to our calendar is loose on purpose.

The five-year jump between books eight and nine is intentional and load-bearing. I wanted readers to feel the time Chelsea spent listening before she heard anything come back.
Kate's age across the books
Internal continuity has caused the most reader questions, so it is worth a separate row.

The DDI documentation discrepancy in book four is not a continuity error. It is a deliberate plot point — Kate's intake records were filed by a Sanctuary administrator who used her birthday-on-arrival rather than her actual age, and the DDI never corrected the file because the lower number made the asset's projected operational life longer on paper. The correction in book five is one of the moments the institution begins to behave like an entity that has noticed Kate is a person.
Faction tree
Human institutions
The Department of Dimensional Intelligence (DDI). Founded in the years between books one and four, consolidated under Admiral William Chen. Public remit: anomalous interstellar phenomena. Classified remit: containment and weaponisation of dimensional contact assets. By book seven, the only human institution still operationally cohesive.
Task Force Eclipse. Mobile DDI combat unit. Operational command: Commander Elias Vance. Strategic command: Admiral William Chen. Founded after the Sanctuary fall to give Kate a mobile platform less vulnerable than a fixed installation. Becomes the de facto human fleet by book seven.
The Alliance. Loose coalition of human civilian governments and corporate entities formed in book seven for the failed strike on Dominion leadership. Mostly disbanded by book eight; superseded by the Council in book nine.
The Council. Post-barrier governance body in book nine. Inherits the diplomatic and ethical work the DDI was structurally incapable of doing. Makes the call about Kate's continued isolation. Hears Chelsea.
The original closers. Seven civilians and military personnel from the Chen Li expedition, Y-160. Their names, with the exception of Chen Li himself, are deliberately not in the books — the cost they paid included being unnamed. Lucas Chen carries Chen Li's heritage and the weight of the others by inheritance.
The Hollowing's structures
The Hollowing itself. A single dimensional consciousness, eddy in the home-dimension current. Older than human civilisation by an amount that does not usefully translate. Wants to merge, not conquer. Lonely.
The Dominion. The DDI's tactical name for the Hollowing. Used in briefings, doctrine, weapons specifications. Not a separate entity from the Hollowing — the same thing, named differently for institutional purposes. The renaming is the failure the DDI cannot see.
The Fist. A localised, weaponised expression of the Hollowing. Emerges from corrupted human bodies under sufficient pressure. First seen in book three. Not a separate intelligence — closer to a reflex of the Hollowing's larger body, focused through the local biology it has rendered readable.
Other dimensional eddies. Mentioned in the worldbuilding. Not seen on-page. The home dimension has more than one consciousness in it. The Hollowing is the only one whose current crossed our seam. The others are not interested in us yet. The phrase "yet" is doing work.
Family lines
The Chen line. Chen Li, original closer. Admiral William Chen, descendant, DDI commander, knew the truth before he said it. Lucas Chen, Admiral's son, scientist, scarred by Hollowing contact, carries the inheritance forward. Alexis Chen, Admiral's granddaughter, analyst, then Director of the DDI training academy, trains the next generation in Kate's legacy.
The Morrison line. Diane Morrison, Kate's mother, freight-route logistics planner, lost on Sanctuary. Kate Morrison. The line ends with Kate, biologically. It does not end with Kate in any other sense. Alexis' next-generation students are her line in the way that matters.
Chelsea's line. Not biological. Chelsea Park is family by choice. By the end of book nine she is Kate's mother in every meaningful sense, and she is also the bridge between Kate-in-the-barrier and the human side, which is the only role in the series that nobody else could have done.
Place reference
Inhabited human space (early series)
Trevatra. The old human colony where Kate was born and her mother worked. Mid-density habitat, mostly freight and logistics. Background presence in the early books; mentioned, not visited.
Outer Rim Listening Post Seven (LP-7). Solo-staffed listening station at a Lagrange point three light-minutes from the nearest populated planet. Where Dr. Marisol Vega receives the first KEP-4C transmission in The Last Transmission. Decommissioned after the events of book three.
KEP-4C mining colony moon. Site of the first documented Hollowing corruption event. Uninhabitable post-corruption. The setting of Last Light in the Dark.
Generation ships in the Void corridor. Several encountered across books two and three. Most are corrupted past recovery by the time the team finds them. Setting of Echoes in the Void.
Sanctuary station. Corrupted military installation orbiting a distant moon. Setting of Fading Darkness. Falls in book three. Kate is recovered from Sanctuary; this is where she meets the Fist.
DDI installations (mid-series)
DDI Headquarters. Earth-orbit. Headquarters of the post-Sanctuary intelligence apparatus. Setting of much of book four.
Eclipse flagship. Mobile DDI command. Where Kate lives, with Chelsea, from book five through book seven. Where the deleted music-room scene takes place, off-page in the published timeline.
Dimensional threshold. Not a place in the strict sense. The seam at which Kate begins to host the Hollowing's geometry. Setting for the climactic scenes of books six and seven.
End-of-series locations
Battle Space. The volume around the Elder Flagship in book eight. Where Kate transforms into the seal. Where the barrier closes.
The Elder Flagship. Dominion command structure. Sealed inside the barrier with the Hollowing.
Peace Chambers / Home. The post-barrier civilian setting of book nine. Where Chelsea works. Where the Council meets. Where the signals come back.
The barrier itself. Where Kate is. Not a place in any conventional sense. A seam. A standing wave. A structure built out of consciousness and attention. From inside, according to Kate's signals, weather. Light. The song now quiet. A place she is at work in. Not empty.
Closing note
A reference document is not a substitute for the books. It is a substitute for the index card pinned over my desk while I was writing them. Most of what is on this page lived on that card in some form for years. Now it is here, where readers can look at it.
If you find a place where this reference contradicts the books, the books are right and this document is wrong. Send me the discrepancy and I will fix the reference. The series is the source of truth. This is the map the writer kept, not the territory.
