The Bishop
Antagonist — World of Shadows
The most dangerous kind of corruption is the kind that wears authority well. The Bishop moves through the series with all the comfort of someone who has never had to answer for himself — which means the moment of reckoning, when it finally comes, hits differently.
About the Bishop
High-ranking Church official. Middle-aged. Comfortable in his position in the way that people get comfortable when they've held power long enough that challenge feels like an aberration.
He's involved in a conspiracy. The shape of it, how deep it runs, who else is implicated — that unfolds across all three World of Shadows books. He appears in The Everett Exorcism, develops further in The Vatican Children, and reaches his reckoning in The Bishop's Legacy. His pursuit by Arthur Vangeest and Desiree — who carries knowledge of the conspiracy — drives the series' central conflict. The arc of his exposure is one of the series' structural threads.
The thing about people like the Bishop is that they rarely start out thinking of themselves as villains. There are always reasons. Always a moment where the choice made sense in context, even if it was wrong. That's what makes them convincing — and more disturbing than someone who's simply evil.
Personality
The Bishop wears authority the way some people wear a second skin. Polished, measured, careful with what he says and to whom. He doesn't reveal himself carelessly.
The corruption beneath the surface is real, but it's layered under enough competence and institutional savvy that it's not immediately visible. That's partly why it's so effective. And partly why, when it does become visible, the weight of it lands so hard.
Character Arc
From authority figure to revealed conspirator — the arc is a long reveal. The Bishop isn't exposed all at once. He's peeled back gradually, layer by layer, across the full trilogy. What's underneath each layer is a little worse than the last.
The title of the third book — The Bishop's Legacy — tells you something about how central his story is to the series' conclusion.
