Arthur Vangeest

Protagonist — World of Shadows

There's a version of Arthur Vangeest you hear about before you actually meet him — the legend, the veteran, the Hunter who's faced things that would unravel most people's minds. Then you meet him and discover the legend conveniently left out the breaking. The guilt. The way a man who's survived everything can still be destroyed by the right kind of loss.

About Arthur

Arthur has been fighting demons longer than most Hunters have been alive. Decades of experience. A body that carries every fight he's walked out of. Black hair going gray, a beard that comes and goes depending on how bad things are, and eyes that have seen things they can't unsee.

He lost his wife and daughter to The Ninth Circle — the kind of wound that either destroys a person or becomes the fire that keeps them moving. For Arthur, it became both, simultaneously, in ways he's never quite sorted out.

He's the one who pulled Abigail out of a cult when she was a child. That wasn't duty. He did it because she needed it, and because somewhere in raising her he found a reason to keep going. She's the most important thing in his world, which is why everything that happens to him across the series lands the way it does.

The voluntary imprisonment — five years underground — he doesn't explain easily. He had reasons. He always has reasons. Sometimes the reasons are really just guilt wearing the mask of logic.

Personality

Arthur is terse, direct, dark-humored in the worst moments. He makes biblical references. He commands attention without trying to, the way people who've survived actual war tend to do.

He's broken in the specific way that forged people are broken — cracks running through something still fundamentally solid. The self-loathing is real. The guilt over past sins runs deep. He struggles with rage in the particular way that people struggle with it when they know they could genuinely hurt something if they stopped holding back.

His strengths are formidable: master combatant, exorcism expertise, the kind of willpower that lets him take punishment that would stop anyone else. He's the person you want on your side when things go wrong. He's also the person most likely to sacrifice himself when a sacrifice isn't strictly required.

That's both a strength and a problem.

Character Arc

Arthur's story is about redemption — not the clean, triumphant kind where everything resolves neatly, but the messy, ongoing, never-quite-finished kind. It starts with him broken and imprisoned, and finds out what he's made of when it actually matters.

What follows takes him places — literal and figurative — that test every version of himself he's ever been.

His relationship with Abigail is the thread running through all of it. She is the thing he did right. Being worthy of that is what drives him when nothing else does.
