Maren Osgood was seventy-two years old the morning she first suspected her back pasture had become a door, and because she was seventy-two and had been widowed for eleven years and had run four hundred head of black Angus through three droughts and one prolapsed heifer with no help but her own two arthritic hands, she did what she always did when the world began to act strangely. She poured coffee. She drank it on the porch. She watched.

The cattle were standing in an arc.

Not a curve, not a bunch. An arc. Thirty-seven head — she counted them, twice — standing shoulder to shoulder in a precise half-moon that opened east toward the sunrise. Their tails all switched in the same direction. Their breath came up in the cold October air in small identical plumes, as if a single animal had been multiplied and set down in pieces on her grass.

Maren had seen cattle bunch for weather. She had seen them circle a calf. She had seen them string out nose-to-tail on a trail like beads. She had never in fifty-one years of ranching seen them stand in geometry.

She sat on the porch step in her husband's old barn coat and finished her coffee and did not go out to them. That was the first decision she made. A lot of people, she thought, would walk right out there and spook them into normal behavior, and then they'd never know what they'd seen. Maren had learned early that the world showed you things only once, and only if you had the patience not to interrupt.

The cattle held the arc for eleven minutes by the porch clock. Then a magpie landed on the top rail of the corral and chattered, and the arc broke — not all at once, but in sequence, left to right, like dominos deciding to stand up again. The cattle wandered. They lowered their heads to the frost. They began to look like cattle.

Maren washed her cup and went inside and wrote the date on the back of a feed receipt. October 3. Arc. 6:11 to 6:22 a.m. She put the receipt in a coffee can where she had been putting other receipts for forty-one years, and she did not tell anyone, because there was no one left to tell.


The radio in the kitchen was broken that week. It had been a slow breaking, the way old things break — static where there used to be voices, a hum underneath the news, a little whine when she touched the dial. She had stopped trying to fix it. The silence suited her. When Dale had been alive he had kept the radio on from sunrise to ten at night, country music and agricultural reports and the weather, and she had loved him too much to tell him it gave her headaches. Now she had her headaches back but she had the quiet, and she counted it as fair.

That morning, though, the radio hummed on its own.

She was at the sink, rinsing her cup, and the radio on the counter — cord unplugged, she had checked, she had unplugged it herself in August — was humming. A low round note, the kind of note a refrigerator makes when it's thinking about dying. It was coming from the speaker. She stood still and listened. It was not one note. It was two, very close together, almost the same but not quite, and the not-quite of them made a third note that lived in the space between her ears.

She turned and looked at the radio. The cord was on the counter, coiled. The plug end was dry and dusty.

The humming stopped.

She stood at the sink for a long time and did not rinse the cup.

It was the kind of thing, she thought, that a person could talk themselves out of. An old refrigerator in a quiet kitchen. The pipes settling. The wind sieving through a gap in the siding where the barn cat had worked a hole last winter. She could, if she tried, make the humming into any of those things. She had made a life, after Dale, out of the small useful trick of talking herself out of the occasional shape in the dark.

She did not try, this time.

She thought instead of her mother, who had kept a saucer of milk on the back step every evening for forty years, for what her mother had called whoever needs it. Her mother had never specified who. The saucer had always been empty in the morning. Her mother had died certain of having been a good neighbor to something.

Maren poured a little milk into a saucer and set it on the back step, and felt ridiculous, and left it there anyway.


By noon the wind had come up, and by three the wind had done a thing she had not seen wind do.

She was walking the fence along the back pasture, checking for the break the yearlings had made in September, and the wind was northwest and strong, the kind of wind that pushed on your shoulder and made your eyes water. She had her hood up. The grass was bent east. And then, for maybe four seconds, in a patch of pasture perhaps twenty yards ahead of her, the grass bent west.

Not swirled. Not eddied. Bent flat to the west, as if a second wind, perfectly opposite, was blowing through that one spot of ground and nowhere else.

Maren stopped walking.

The grass held its wrong direction for a breath longer and then snapped back. The normal wind pressed her hood against her head. The cold worked its way down her collar. The patch of grass was grass again.

She stood for a while and watched it. Then she walked up to it, slowly, the way she would approach a new calf. At the edge of the patch — she could see the edge, a neat circle perhaps five yards across, where the grass had been bent and was still settling — the air felt warmer. Not summer warm. Spring warm. A thawed warm, with a taste to it. The taste was faint. It was like the taste that comes off a freshly split rock, or the copper you taste in your mouth before a nosebleed. It was not a taste she had a name for, and she had names for most things.

She stepped into the circle.

She was not afraid. That surprised her a little. She had been afraid of plenty of things in her life — the bank, the August hail, the phone call about Dale — and she knew what fear tasted like, and this was not that. This was the feeling she'd had as a child when she walked into her grandmother's attic and found, once, a whole room she had never noticed was there.

In the center of the circle the wind did not touch her at all. It was very still. Above her, the sky looked a little wrong — a little too high, a little too curved, as if she were seeing it through the bottom of a jar. She looked down at her boots. Her boots were on grass. The grass was warm.

She thought about Dale. She thought, Would you come and see this with me? She thought, I think something is here.

And something, very quietly, answered.

It did not answer in words. It answered in a feeling — a feeling like being looked at from the inside of your own chest. She put her hand over her heart and the feeling moved, politely, into her palm, as if it had been asked.

Maren stood in the circle for perhaps a minute. Then she stepped carefully back out, and the cold wind took her again, and the world returned to its usual shape.

She walked home. She did not check the rest of the fence. She knew, the way a woman knows when her kettle is almost boiled, that the fence was not the important thing anymore.


She waited until full dark to go back out.

She took a flashlight with fresh batteries. She took Dale's old barn coat even though her own was warmer, because she wanted the weight of him across her shoulders. She took a thermos of coffee, which she did not need and did not plan to drink, because it felt right to bring something to offer. She had grown up on a ranch where you never visited a neighbor empty-handed, and she could not have said why that rule applied here, but it seemed to.

The pasture at night was a different country. The mountains to the west were a blackness deeper than the sky. The stars were thick — no moon, and the light pollution out of Whisper Ridge was the light pollution of maybe forty porch bulbs, which was nothing. Her breath came out white and the frost on the grass crunched under her boots. She did not use the flashlight. She did not need it.

The cattle were bedded in the south corner. She could hear one of them chewing. She walked wide of them and came up on the patch of ground where, in daylight, the grass had bent wrong.

She saw it before she reached it.

It was not a light. It was not a shape. It was a place in the air where she could not quite focus her eyes, a shimmer no more than the size of a barn door, hanging a few feet above the grass, slowly turning. When she blinked, she lost it. When she looked a little to the side of it, she found it again. It was like trying to see a very faint star — if she looked directly, it disappeared.

The shimmer was the color of nothing. She tried, later, to find a word for it, and there was no word. Silver was the closest, and silver was wrong.

She stopped at the edge of the circle of warm air. She set down the thermos. She said, out loud, in a voice that surprised her by being steady:

"Good evening."

The shimmer turned a little faster.

She did not step in. She felt, without knowing why she felt it, that she had been invited to the doorway but not across it. She sat down, slowly, on the cold grass at the edge — because her hip was bad and standing hurt, and because sitting felt like the right posture for a guest — and she put her hands flat on her knees.

"My name is Maren," she said.

The shimmer shifted. For a moment — for less than a moment — it took on an outline. She could not have drawn the outline. It did not resemble an animal. It did not resemble a person. It resembled, if it resembled anything, a handwriting she had seen once and forgotten, the loops of a letter in a language she did not read.

And then — this was the part she never told anyone, even when she might have had reason to — the outline changed, and it was hers.

Not her body. Not her face. The outline was the shape of a woman sitting on grass with her hands flat on her knees. It was not a reflection. A reflection would have been the wrong way round. It was a copy, careful and exact, held in the air the way a child holds up a drawing it has just finished.

The entity, whatever it was, had made itself the shape of her.

Maren drew in a breath so slow her chest ached with it. She understood, all at once and without needing to be told, that the shimmer had seen her and was showing her that it had seen her. It was not threatening. It was not courting. It was, very precisely, saying hello.

She did not know what she was allowed to do. She raised her right hand, slowly, and held it palm-out the way she would to a horse she did not know.

The shimmer-Maren, a few feet off the ground, raised its right hand.

The shimmer-Maren lowered its hand when she lowered hers. She turned her head; it turned its head. She set her palm on the grass; it set its palm on nothing, precisely the height her palm would have been had there been a grass to meet it. She laughed, a small surprised sound that rose up out of her before she knew it was coming, and the shimmer did not laugh — it could not, she understood, make the sound — but the hum of it brightened for a moment, and she thought: it knows I laughed. It is pleased that I laughed.

They sat like that, woman and copy-of-woman, for what might have been thirty seconds and might have been twenty minutes. Time did something strange inside the circle of warm air. She did not try to measure it. She could hear her own heartbeat, and she could hear, underneath it, the low hum from the morning — the two-notes-that-made-a-third — humming from the shimmer itself, the way a struck bell keeps humming in the dark.

When it let her go — and it was like being let go, she thought afterward, like a hand she had not known was holding her opening at last — it let her go softly. The outline dissolved back into shimmer. The shimmer dimmed. The warm air cooled by degrees. The circle shrank.

Before it was gone entirely, the shimmer did one more thing.

It placed something in the grass.

She did not see it placed. She saw only that, where there had been nothing a moment before, there was now something — a small pale shape in the frost, about the size of her thumbnail.

Then the shimmer folded in on itself like a piece of paper being put away, and the wind came back, and she was alone.

She did not pick the thing up right away. She sat until her hands went numb from the cold. Then she reached forward and took it.

It was warm.

It was the shape of a seed. Not any seed she knew — not grass seed, not wheat, not pine. Smooth on one side, ridged on the other, the color of bone dust. It weighed nothing. When she held it up to the starlight she thought, for just a second, that she could see through it, but it was not transparent; it was that whatever was inside it was starlight, too.

She put it in the pocket of Dale's coat, over her heart, and she walked home.


In the morning she did not go to the sheriff. She did not call the extension agent. She did not drive to the Whisper Ridge clinic where the new girl worked the desk and would have listened politely and written a note that said Maren O. — possible early dementia, follow up?, because Maren knew how old women got listened to in small towns, and she was not prepared to be listened to that way.

She put the seed in the coffee can with the receipts.

She watched the cattle. They did not arc again, not that week. They grazed like cattle. They moved in the scattered, meandering clumps of cattle. Whatever had stood them up in a half-moon on October third had let them go, and they had forgotten, the way cattle forget.

Maren did not forget.

She did not tell a living soul, not because she was afraid of being thought crazy — she was, in fact, entirely willing to be thought crazy, she was seventy-two and past caring — but because she had understood, sitting in the cold on her back pasture, that the shimmer was a visitor. And a visitor on her land was her business, and her business alone, the way a stranger who came hungry to Dale's back door had always been Dale's business. You did not call the county on a hungry stranger. You fed them and you let them go.

She went about her fall. She brought the cattle in. She sold the steers. She stacked the last of the hay and split a winter's worth of pine. In the evenings she sat with the coffee can on the kitchen table and took the seed out and turned it in her fingers. It stayed warm. It never cooled. It hummed, faintly, when she held it to her ear — the two notes, and their third note underneath.

Once, in late October, walking the back pasture, she saw the grass bend wrong again for half a second, a small circle no larger than her hat. She stopped. The circle closed. She walked on.

She thought, each time, I am being let alone. And she thought, Thank you.


Six weeks after the arc, she saw the Reeves girl on the television.

She didn't watch television much — the set was in the front room and she mostly used it for the weather — but the thing had happened, whatever the thing was, had come loose from its quiet into the news. Grainy footage of fractures in a field outside Whisper Ridge. A young sheriff's deputy being interviewed, standing too straight. And then the girl, Harper Reeves, Jack Reeves's daughter, seventeen years old and looking older than seventeen, standing next to a federal woman in a dark coat and being asked a question she did not want to answer.

Maren knew Harper. She had watched Harper show a heifer at the county fair at eleven. She had bought jam from her at a church fundraiser. A good child. A steady child. Now she was on the news with the shape in her face of someone who had been asked to carry a thing too large for her.

The reporter asked Harper how long she had known.

Maren turned the television off.

She sat for a while in the quiet front room and she thought about knocking on the Reeves door. She thought about walking into Jack's kitchen and saying, I want to tell your daughter a thing. She thought about putting the seed in Harper's palm and saying, I met one too. I met one first.

She did not do it.

She thought, instead, that the girl had enough. That the girl had scientists, and government, and friends her own age, and the machinery of a country that had decided, at last, to pay attention. The girl did not need an old woman coming in from the back pasture with a coffee can of receipts and a seed that hummed.

And the truth was — Maren admitted this to herself, sitting alone with the fire and the clock ticking — the truth was she did not want to give the seed up. It was the warmest thing in her house. It was the only warm thing she had been given, by anyone, in eleven years.

She kept it.


She kept it all the way through.

She kept it through the winter and the hearings and the night the shimmer crossed the highway and the soldiers came down the county road. She kept it through the spring that the scientists called Threshold and the summer that the news would not stop calling the end of the world. She watched, from her porch, the Reeves girl and her friends walk further and further into a story that had started, in a small quiet way, on her own back pasture. She watched them give up things a seventeen-year-old should not have to give up. She watched the federal coats get darker and the press conferences get longer. She never picked up the phone.

Once, in the second year, a woman from some agency she had never heard of came up her drive in a white SUV and asked her if she had noticed anything unusual on her property in the last several years. Maren said no, ma'am. The woman thanked her and left a card. Maren put the card in the coffee can, with the receipts, next to the seed.

Once, a young man from the same agency came and asked if she was willing to sign a form consenting to a flyover of her pastures. She signed it. The flyover found nothing. Whatever had chosen her back pasture, in October of that first year, had not chosen it again.

She lived to be eighty-one.

When she died, in her bed, in the room she had slept in with Dale for forty-three years, the seed was in her hand. Her niece from Billings, going through the house, found the coffee can and the receipts and the card. She found, also, a note in her aunt's handwriting, which had gone spidery in the last years, saying simply:

This was given to me. I was not afraid. I am grateful.

The niece did not know what the seed was. She thought it was a pebble. She put it in a small glass jar and set it on a shelf in her own house in Billings, where it hummed, very softly, for a great many years, in a key that no one in the household ever quite heard but which made the dogs lie down and sleep easily on the floor beneath it.

The niece also found, tucked behind the cookbooks on the kitchen shelf, a saucer. It had not been washed. There was, in the bottom of it, a faint white ring, the sort a cat might leave, except that Maren had kept no cat in her last years. The niece washed the saucer and put it with the good china, and did not think about it again.


This is not a story anyone at Whisper Ridge tells. Maren Osgood is not in any of the books about the early years. She is not in any of the briefings. The government, for all its patience with fractures and rifts and the long slow work of learning how to live next to the unseen, never found her arc in the grass. They never interviewed her cattle. They never asked the right question of the right old woman.

They asked Harper Reeves, who was a child, to hold the whole weight.

They should, perhaps, have walked up more driveways. They should, perhaps, have sat on more porches. They should have known — and perhaps, in the very end, when they learned at last to listen to visitors who did not arrive in ships — they did know — that first contact is rarely the thing it looks like in the news.

First contact is an old woman on a back pasture saying, Good evening, to a shimmer.

First contact is a cup of coffee not drunk.

First contact is a seed, warm as a hand, kept in a coffee can full of receipts, by a woman who understood, as all good ranchers understand, that some visitors come to be fed and let go.
