About Belphegor

Belphegor is a Demon Lord — the kind of entity that operates on a scale most demons don't reach. Physical hosts can't sustain the presence for long; a body typically degrades within hours, which tells you something about the sheer intensity of what's being contained.

He came to Ravens Peak searching for something. What, exactly, is part of the mystery that drives the story. Whatever he was looking for was important enough to risk the exposure, important enough to take a host as significant as Abigail.

The possession is one of the series' central crises — Abigail occupied and fighting it from the inside, Arthur working the problem from the outside, everyone trying to survive long enough to make a difference. It's not a clean situation. It never is when something this powerful decides to make itself known.

Personality

Belphegor isn't human, and he doesn't bother pretending to think like one. He's ancient, powerful, and operating according to an agenda that predates anything we'd recognize as civilization. When he communicates, it's without the social performance humans use to manage each other.

There's a strange kind of clarity in that, honestly. He's not corrupt — corruption implies something that was once better. He's just what he is, all the way down. The honesty of that is, somehow, more frightening than something that bothers to deceive.

Character Arc

Belphegor's arc in the series is focused and devastating. He comes with a purpose, makes his presence impossible to ignore, and forces everyone around him to rise to a level they didn't know they had.

His defeat doesn't come easy. Nothing that matters does.
